Most City of Detroit offices to close for Christmas and New Year's holidays

Most City of Detroit offices will be closed beginning Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2024 in observance of the Christmas and New Year’s holidays and reopen on Thursday, Jan. 2, 2025. Normal police, fire and bus services will be provided. Please note the following:

Department of Public Works

The Department of Public Works (DPW) will NOT collect refuse, recycling and bulk items on Christmas and New Year’s Day. Collection will occur one day later than scheduled. During both weeks, Friday's collection will take place on Saturday.

 

Parking Department

Parking Department Under the Municipal Parking Department, Ford Underground Garage will be closed December 25, 28 & 31 and January 1. The Eastern Market Garage will be closed on Dec. 24-25 & 31 and Jan. 1.

There will be no parking enforcement at parking meters, excluding Residential Parking Zones, from Dec. 23 - Jan. 1, and individuals are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity to support Detroit businesses.

 

Detroit Health Department
All Detroit Health Department locations will be closed December 24 until January 1. Regular hours of operation for all locations will resume on January 2.

The Detroit Health Department’s seven Neighborhood Wellness Centers and Rides to Care service will be closed on Dec. 24, 25, & 31 and Jan. 1. The wellness centers and Rides to Care service will operate during their regular hours during the remainder of the month.

The following Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) clinics will be open during the holidays:

WIC at Northwest, 18930 Greenfield Rd, Floor 1, Detroit, MI 48235

WIC at Samaritan - Samaritan Wellness Center, 5555 Conner, Detroit, MI 48213

The clinics are open December 26, 27 & 30 from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.

Detroit Housing Resource HelpLine
The Detroit Housing Resource HelpLine and CAM Access Points will be closed Dec. 24, 25 & 31 and Jan. 1.

During the weeks of December 23 and December 30, the Detroit Housing Resource HelpLine will be open Monday, Thursday, and Friday from 8 a.m. - 6 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. - noon.  CAM Access Points will be open at Cass Community Services, 11850 Woodrow Wilson, on Monday, Thursday, and Friday from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., and at John D Dingell VA Medical Center, 4646 John R Street, Monday, Thursday and Friday from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Regular business hours for the both the Detroit Housing Resource HelpLine and in person access points will resume on Monday, January 6.


Detroit Department of Transportation

The Detroit Department of Transportation (DDOT) will operate bus service on Christmas (Dec. 25) and New Year’s Day (Jan. 1) as a Sunday schedule.  Regular weekday bus service will be provided on Dec. 24 and Dec. 31.  DDOT customer service also will be closed on Dec. 24, 25 & 31 and Jan. 1.


Detroit People Mover
The Detroit People Mover will operate regular hours during the remainder of December, with the exception of Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day. The system is closed on Christmas and New Year's Day. Normal schedule resumes Jan. 2.

Regular hours of operation are:
Monday - Friday from 6:30 a.m. - midnight
Saturday from 10 a.m. - midnight
Sunday from 10 a.m. – 8 p.m.

Exceptions
Dec. 24 - Christmas Eve from 10 a.m. – 8 p.m.
Dec. 31 - New Year's Eve from 11 a.m.- 2 a.m.


Detroit Water and Sewerage Department
The Water and Sewerage Department will continue to respond to emergencies 24/7 including water main breaks. Customer Service for account assistance at 313-267-8000 will be closed Dec. 24-25 and Dec. 31-Jan. 1. Customers may still pay their bill by phone using the automated system or at a kiosk or access their accounts at detroitmi.gov/paymywaterbill.

 

Buildings, Safety Engineering and Environmental Department
The Buildings, Safety Engineering and Environmental Department (BSEED) will be closed from Dec. 24 through January 1.  All electronic and online services are offered 24/7via ACCELA, however, users should expect a delayed response.

 

Emergencies During the Holidays
During the holidays, individuals may call BSEED at (313) 471-5121 in case of an emergency, such as no heat or power or to report water or sewage in the basement.

 

The Office of the Chief Financial Officer

All offices will be closed during the holiday but customers can visit detroitmi.gov/departments/office-chief-financial-officer to download forms, view financial reports, access property tax information and make payments.


Options to pay City of Detroit property taxes are:

Online: Visit detroitmi.gov/payproptax. Enter your address or parcel number (include the period or dash). Pay with eCheck or credit card.*

Mobile App: Download the DivDat app on your smartphone. Include the period or dash in your parcel number. Pay with eCheck or credit card.*

Phone: Call (855) 894-2400 to pay with a credit card.*

Kiosk: Find a DivDat kiosk in your neighborhood at codkiosk.com. Bring cash, check, or credit card to pay. Include the period or dash in your parcel number.

Mail: Send check, money order, or cashier’s check, along with your payment coupon to:
City of Detroit, Property Tax Department, P.O. Box 33193, Detroit, MI 48232-5193.

* Additional fees will be applied to all debit and credit card transactions.

Payment and coupon must be received by the due date to be considered timely. The preferred payment method is online, mobile app, phone, or kiosk. Mail payments should only be used as a last resort.
 
Property owners can view their property tax bills anytime online at detroitmi.gov/payproptax.


Doing Business with the City during the Holidays
Although offices may be closed, many City services, such as tax and fee payments and permit applications, are available online at detroitmi.gov. In terms of some payments to the City of Detroit, individuals also may utilize the DivDat kiosk or mobile app.
