The City of Detroit will be working on the Virginia Park Streetscape Project in the start of the Summer 2026.

What Changes will Happen?

The Virginia Park Road Reconstruction project is a curb-to-curb reconstruction of the historic 30-foot-wide road from John C. Lodge Freeway to Woodward Ave. The road itself is characterized by its original brick paver surface and stone curbs which will be replaced. Additional improvements of strategically target areas could include repair of worn concrete sidewalk and driveway approaches that front the street, replacement of several noncompliant ADA crosswalk ramps, new shade street trees, and minimal upgrades to existing site furnishings. The estimated construction cost for the project is $5,278,100 with construction starting on late Summer of 2026 to Fall 2027.

What's Happening

The City of Detroit will begin construction on the Virginia Park Streetscape in August 2026, starting with the center block (Phase 1: Virginia Park: 2nd Ave. to 3rd Ave).  Sidewalk improvements will begin first, followed by brick roadway removal, installation of a new concrete base, and brick restoration. To safely complete the work, the entire block will be closed to vehicle traffic, with access limited to emergency vehicles. Residents will continue to receive construction updates through email, flyer notices, and other communication methods.

Brick Removal Process

During this process, you will see workers sorting reusable bricks onto pallets, and brick pavers that do not meet the reuse criteria being stockpiled along the side of the roadway. No bricks will be disposed of until the community has had an opportunity to review and select reclaimed bricks during a designated community Brick Reclaiming Day (October 17-18). This event is for the Virginia Park neighborhood only.

Most up-to-date project/construction dates:

  • August 22: Sidewalk work will resume, including select repairs along driveways. On-street parking will be allowed between 6:00 PM - 6:00 AM. No on-street parking during the day to allow construction crews to complete the sidewalk work.
  • August 26: Residents’ last chance for scheduled bulk waste pickup.
  • August 27: Sidewalk work will be completed, and road will be closed to vehicle traffic. Residents should prioritize parking at the rear of their property (off the alley), or use on-street parking on 2nd Ave. or 3rd Ave.
  • September 2: Residents must move trash and recycling bins to the nearest intersection for pickup in collection zone.  Residents may continue to place bundled or bagged yard waste on the berm by Tuesday to allow contractors sufficient time to transport for pick-up by Wednesday 7:00 am.
  • October 17-18: Designated community Brick Reclaiming Day, Unused and unsalvageable brick pavers removed during construction will be made available to community members from the Virginia Park neighborhood. Materials will be based on a first-come, first-served basis.
