- Family-friendly activities offered at Detroit parks and recreation centers
- Halloween Trunk-or-treat activities at Police precincts, Fire stations and recreation centers
- Block clubs encouraged to enter decorating contest
- City seeks block clubs and community groups to volunteer by supporting trunk-or-treating at police precincts and fire stations
- Parks and Recreation to host spooky fun Oct. 24 and fall activities Nov. 7
The City of Detroit continues its tradition of Halloween in the D with a host of fun, family-friendly and, sometimes, spooky activities during the weeks surrounding Halloween - Oct. 24, Oct. 31 and Nov. 7. This will make the 9th year for the event, which began in 2018. Mayor Mary Sheffield, other City officials, community representatives and corporate sponsors outlined plans at a news conference Oct. 13 at Helen Moore Community Center on the west side.
Returning this year is a Halloween decorating contest. The City is inviting neighbors and block clubs to bring their street to life by decorating with pumpkins, cobwebs, ghosts, and goblins. The award categories are: best theme; scariest house and most participation. The best-decorated blocks will get bragging rights and prizes! Residents are encouraged to light up their block with spooky fun in this friendly competition. Learn more at halloweeninthed.org.
The Halloween in the D effort is led by the Department of Neighborhoods with support from the General Services, Police and Fire departments. Other City departments also join in the effort by donating candy, decorating cars and passing out candy at various Halloween in the D locations.
The City also is still soliciting sponsors and candy donations from area businesses and volunteers for the series of special events, Halloween parties, and trunk-or-treat locations at police stations and fire stations.
Most of the Halloween in the D events will take place Oct. 31. Additional Halloween in the D events include ScareFest on Oct. 24 at Palmer Park and Fall Fest on Nov. 7 at Chandler Park.
“Halloween has become a time of great fun for children and families across Detroit, with plenty of opportunities for them to trick or treat at fire stations, police precincts and play at recreation centers and city parks,” said Mayor Sheffield. “Halloween in the D gets better every year and that's thanks to the great work of city employees and our many sponsors.”
During Halloween in the D in 2025:
- Total Pieces of Candy Distributed / 1 million+
- Total Amount Donated / $104,000
- Total Number of Volunteers / 700+
- Attendance at Halloween in the D Events / 30,000+
Residents’ Participation Encouraged
While the City is taking care of most of the planning and logistics, there are still some things residents can do to support the Halloween in the D celebration. Residents are encouraged to volunteer to decorate a car for a trunk-or-treat event at police precincts and fire stations.
For more information on activities or to volunteer, visit halloweeninthed.org or call (313) 224-4415.

“Supporting the communities where we live, work, and play is part of who we are at Barton Malow. Halloween in the D is a night when Detroit shows up for its kids, and we’re proud to show up for Detroit,” said Kara Martini, Sr Director - Detroit Office, Barton Malow.
