Opportunities for Local Businesses
Hiring Detroit Workers
City encourage and maximizes employment opportunities involving skilled local residents in the revitalization of Detroit, in publicly funded construction projects or publicly funded demolition/rehabilitation projects.
The City of Detroit welcomes and prioritizes working with suppliers who have strong ties to the Detroit community. Businesses certified through CRIO’s Detroit Business Opportunity Program qualify for equalization credits that make their bids for City contracts more competitive.
The janitorial/custodial and security service opportunities within the Detroit Supply Schedule Program are open only to CRIO-certified Detroit Based Businesses. Other opportunities, like the Grounds/Forestry services supply schedule and Proposal N Demolition and Trashout programs, are open to all bidders but set aside 30% of awards for CRIO-certified Detroit Based and Detroit Small and Micro Businesses.
The following certifications receive equalization credits for City opportunities:
- Detroit Based Business
- Detroit Headquartered Business
- Detroit Resident Business
- Detroit Based Micro Business
- Detroit Small Business
- Joint Venture
- Mentor Venture
Visit CRIO’s website to learn more about getting certified. Businesses must include a current certificate in their bids in order to qualify for equalization credits.
Suppliers and potential suppliers should be aware that City-funded construction contracts of $3 million and over have Detroit resident hiring requirements. Please see Executive Order 2021-02 for more information.
