Detroit Police Department announces hire of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Executive Manager

DETROIT  – The Detroit Police Department has hired Mary Engelman as its new Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Executive Manager. “This is a game-changer for our community and the Detroit Police Department,” Chief James E. White said. “I’m a firm believer that we become better with a commitment to equal opportunity for all. We are proud to welcome Mary to our team.” “I’m grateful for this amazing opportunity to help make the Detroit Police Department leaders in diversity, equity, and inclusion. With Chief White’s leadership and support in this area, the department will continue its standard of 21st century policing for Detroiters,” said Executive Manager Mary Engelman.

Engelman comes to DPD after serving as Deputy Director and Interim Director of the Michigan Department of Civil Rights. She will be tasked with creating a more inclusive environment, internally and externally, by improving diversity, equity, and inclusion from the Office of the Chief to patrol officers through investments in the department, community events, and more.

Engelman’s career experience includes an extensive background in leadership, government affairs, and community outreach, as well as operations and budget management. She has several professional affiliations including Liaison to the Michigan Women’s Commission, Michigan Poverty Task Force Member (2019-present), and Michigan Coronavirus Task Force on Racial Disparities Committee (2020 to present). Engelman holds a bachelor’s degree in English from Evangel University. She resides in Metro Detroit with her husband and twin daughters.
