Safe Routes to School (SRTS) aims to create routes for children of all ages and abilities to bike, walk, and roll to school in a safe and secure environment. The program not only works to create a safer environment by reducing traffic hazards in the roadway, but also encourages physical activity needed for children to maintain good health. Providing avenues for children to walk and bike to school can both promote a child's sense of independence and increase learning readiness in the classroom.

The SRTS grant program is funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation and administered by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT). The program funds both physical infrastructure improvements near schools (for example, sidewalk repairs, improved crosswalks, and signage), as well as educational activities to encourage walking and biking. Interested schools work with the City of Detroit's Complete Streets team to identify needed and priority improvements at their schools and then apply for grant funding through MDOT.
