Detroit Health Department celebrates 5th annual Block Party with Detroit families
- Free community event provided residents with health screenings, vaccinations and family-friendly activities
The Detroit Health Department hosted its 5th Annual Block Party Saturday, bringing Detroit families and residents together for a day focused on health, wellness and community. During the official program, Mayor Mary Sheffield joined Detroit Health Department leadership and community partners to highlight the importance of connecting Detroit families with public health services.
“When we listen to residents and make health information and resources accessible, we strengthen our commitment to health equity and improving health outcomes for Detroiters,” said Mayor Mary Sheffield. “The Block Party reflects that commitment by bringing these services directly to Detroit families.”
The day began with the Safe Sleep Walk-N-Rally, led by the Maternal and Child Health team. The initiative raised awareness about safe sleep practices and the importance of protecting the health and safety of infants and young children.
The event, held at 100 Mack Ave. on John R between Mack and Erskine, supported the Detroit Health Department’s efforts to make public health accessible to residents where they live, work and gather.
“The Block Party gives Detroit families a welcoming place to come together, learn about their health and connect with the Detroit Health Department,” said Chief Public Health Officer and Director Ali Abazeed. “Through our annual event, we bring public health services directly to our community. We want residents to leave with information they can use to protect their health and make healthier choices.”
Residents had access to back-to-school vaccinations, health screenings and lead testing. Detroit Health Department staff and participating public health vendors were on hand to provide information and answer questions about health programs and resources.
More than 100 residents attended the event, with 67 vaccinations administered and 40 health screenings completed.
The community enjoyed live music, games, food, giveaways and fun activities for the entire family. The event provided the Detroit Health Department with an opportunity to engage with residents beyond traditional health care settings and raise awareness of public health programs and support available to residents.
