Detroit Fire Department Statement on GEMT Program Approval

2025

The City of Detroit Fire Department (DFD) is proud to announce Governor Whitmer has officially signed HB5695, approving Michigan’s participation in the Ground Emergency Medical Transportation (GEMT) program. This critical initiative will provide much-needed federal reimbursement for emergency medical transport services to Medicaid recipients, ensuring stable funding for DFD’s EMS operations and enhancing emergency medical care for Detroit residents.

We extend our deepest gratitude to Governor Whitmer, state legislators, local leaders, and all stakeholders who worked tirelessly to make this program a reality. Their commitment to strengthening emergency medical services will have a lasting impact, allowing DFD to recruit and retain top EMS professionals, invest in training and equipment, and improve overall service delivery.

By securing millions of dollars in potential funding, this program reduces financial burdens on local taxpayers while reinforcing Detroit’s emergency medical infrastructure. DFD remains committed to providing the highest level of emergency care to our community, and we are grateful for the leadership and advocacy that made this achievement possible.
