City announces $95M 2023 infrastructure improvement program; paving of 81 miles of roads and replacing 70K damaged sidewalk flags
The City of Detroit has begun its 2023 road construction season with plans to complete $95 million worth of road and sidewalk improvements. This year, the Department of Public Works (DPW) will repave 81 miles of major and residential roads. It also will start a new streetscape project along Dexter and complete three beautiful new streetscapes along key commercial corridors on East Warren, West Warren, and Rosa Parks Boulevard.
Forty-one miles of local residential streets, and 40 miles of major roads will be improved this year. Most residential streets will be paved by city crews, while contractors will pave the major roads. All contracts awarded through the city’s procurement process will require most work to be performed by Detroit residents.
Some major thoroughfares planned for improvements throughout the city this year include segments of W. Vernor, Harper, McNichols, Meyers, Conant, and 7 Mile Road. Work is already underway on some projects and weather permitting, the construction season will continue until December. In addition, we are planning for the thousands of people who will visit our city next year for the NFL draft, and infrastructure improvements will be made in the areas where we expect heavy pedestrian traffic. The city also plans an expanded sidewalk replacement program this year. Typically, the City spends about $4.5 million per year to replace broken sidewalk flags that are damaged by city trees located between the curb and sidewalk. Thanks to an additional $20.5 million in budget surplus funds approved by the Detroit City Council, this year the city will have a $25 million sidewalk improvement program.
Funding for the road projects will come from a combination of federal and state transportation funds, as well as road bond funds. “We are committed to improving the quality of life and creating opportunity for our citizens. In addition to providing needed road and sidewalk repairs, we are also requiring that 51% of the work be done by Detroiters so our residents can take part in the opportunities created through our infrastructure improvement projects,” said DPW Director Ron Brundidge.
A new streetscape project will begin along Dexter Avenue, between Webb and Davison. This project will add new street lighting, landscaping, street furniture, as well as new road pavements. Similar projects along Livernois, W. McNichols, Grand River and Kercheval have helped spur the revitalization of those commercial corridors, and we anticipate similar results when the Dexter project is completed.
Sidewalk Expansion Program
Under this year’s expanded sidewalk replacement program, up to 70,000 damaged of missing sidewalk sections (approx. 80 miles) will be replaced this construction season.
Repairs for sidewalks will be given priority in the following categories:
- Near schools, churches, and parks
- Identified and requested by registered neighborhood block clubs
- Requested by senior citizens and disabled residents
- Adjacent to city road resurfacing projects
- Along city jurisdiction commercial corridors where cleanup and beautification are planned for existing backlog of requests from prior years
Speed Hump Program Continues
The City’s commitment to reducing speeding in neighborhood roads continues in 2023. The new 2023 speed humps slated for installation will bring cumulative totals to over 10,000 speed humps installed since the beginning of the program in 2018. Since its inception, this program has been extremely effective in making our streets safer for pedestrians and vehicle operators.
