Callers impersonating Detroit Animal Care and Control staff to scam pet owners

2025

Detroit Animal Care and Control (DACC) has become aware of a scam targeting owners of lost pets by impersonating DACC staff.

Residents have reported receiving phone calls about their lost pet being found but injured and that payment is required for emergency surgery. It is believed that owners of lost pets who post this information – including their phone numbers – on their social media are being targeted by scammers. The caller requested payment via Apple Pay.

DACC will never ask for any kind of payment over the phone. Also, DACC does not accept payments from gift cards or Apple Pay.

If a resident has received a similar call, please report it to your Detroit Police Precinct or call Detroit Police Department’s non-emergency line at (313) 267-4600.
