Latinx Grant Community Meeting - April 6, 2023

2023

We want to spend some time hearing from YOU as we start this grant project to collect stories and memories of Southwest Detroit. We would like your input and opinions on important periods in history, community boundaries, and significant places.

All community members are welcome and we'll have refreshments available!

The Detroit City Council's Historic Designation Advisory Board (HDAB) has developed a broad, multi-year initiative to document and highlight the histories of underrepresented communities in Detroit. The Historic Context of Latinx Communities in Detroit is a project that aims to explore the rich Latinx history within Detroit by working with community partners and stakeholders, educating the general public, surveying historic resources, and nominating a property to the National Register of Historic Places. You can stay up-to-date on the grant by visiting our website.

The main goals of this project are to:

  • Identify historic sites throughout Detroit that are eligible for listing in the National Register;
  • Develop a historic context statement that tells the story of the Latinx community in Detroit; and
  • Nominate an significant property to the NRHP that exhibits a strong connection to Latinx history in Detroit.

The Historic Context of Latinx Communities in Detroit project is being supported in part by an Underrepresented Communities grant from the Historic Preservation Fund administered by the National Park Service.
