Updates on water system upgrades
Since 2019, the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department (DWSD) has been investing close to $100 million annually through the Capital Improvement Program (CIP) to upgrade the water and sewer systems throughout the city of Detroit. This page provides residents and businesses the updates specific to the water system.
Current Projects
- Far West Detroit Stormwater Improvement Project including water main and lead service line replacement – completion expected in 2026
- Lead service line replacement neighborhood-by-neighborhood starting with the highest density of lead lines and where there are likely children and/or seniors in the homes - using $90 million in federal funding - see more here.
- Water main replacement and lead service line replacement on various streets on the eastside and westside

General updates:
- Restoration occurs from April through October, weather permitting. Construction performed from November through March will include keeping streets, alleys and lawns safe. Contractors will return in the Spring to perform restoration.

- Jefferson Chalmers water main and lead service line replacement - Completed in June 2023
- New Center Water main and lead service line replacement – Completed in May 2022
- North Rosedale Park Water and Sewer Upgrades
- Water main and lead service line replacement in Evergreen-Lahser, McNichols, Miller Drove, Minock Park, Riverdale, and Rosedale Park – Completed in June 2023
- Water main and lead service line replacement for various streets on the westside and eastside – Completed in June 2022
- Water main and lead service line replacement in Evergreen-Outer Drive West, Grand River, Warrendale, and Franklin Park – Completed in October 2023
