Jamila ‘Mimi’ Trent was born and raised in Detroit, MI. She moved to the greater Nashville area in 1994 and returned to her hometown of Detroit, MI, in 2021. While in Nashville, she received her bachelor’s degree in religious studies and Ph.D. in Social Justice. She was an active member of the church and in the community. She was a Community/Volunteer coordinator with the NAACP in Nashville and Murfreesboro, TN; a board member with Bradley Academy Historical Museum (Murfreesboro, TN) and IDA Cares (Nashville, TN); a freelance writer with The Spiritual Herald (Murfreesboro, TN); participated in the Taking the Streets Back Campaign, and WNSG Toy Drive (Nashville, TN).
She also worked in the breach consulting industry for nearly 15 years and became a HUD-certified Housing Counselor. She works as a Housing Counselor at Central Detroit Christian Community Development, also known as CDC.
She has deep roots in the community and wanted to bring her community engagement experience back to her hometown. We talk about her experience working at the CDC addressing pressing housing issues in the community and her thoughts on how to resolve them.
