Why is HIV Prevention So Important?
On average, 4 out of every 100,000 Black women in the City of Detroit are diagnosed with HIV each year. In 2023, this rate was three times higher than that of Latina women and 1.2 times higher than that of white women. While diagnosis disparity continues to shrink, large historic disparities are apparent in the number of women currently living with HIV. The current prevalence rate (the number of people living with HIV) for Black women (337.0 per 100,000) is 4 times higher than the prevalence among Latina women (81.1 per 100,000) and over 15 times higher than the prevalence among white women (221.8 per 100,000).

There are ways to prevent or lower the risks of being diagnosed with HIV, including abstinence, proper use of condoms, proper use of needles, and using Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP). PrEP is for people who don’t have HIV but are at risk of acquiring the disease.

If You Are Living With HIV, There is Help!

Black and Latina women are more likely to be virally suppressed (69% and 70%) compared to white women (40%) in Detroit. This difference is likely due to enrollment in the Ryan White Program. Two out of three Black and Latina women with HIV in Detroit are enrolled in the Ryan White Program, compared to only 1 in 3 white women.
