DETROIT ANIMAL CARE AND CONTROL RECEIVES $123,770 GRANT FROM PETSMART CHARITIES® TO FUEL SPAY AND NEUTER EFFORTS IN DETROIT

Enhancing Detroit Animal Care and Control’s Adoption Program by offering free spay and neuter services, microchips, and vaccines

Detroit, MI – May 15, 2019 – Detroit Animal Care and Control (DACC) today announced it has recently received a $123,770 grant from PetSmart Charities, the leading funder of animal welfare in North America, to help fuel its spay and neuter efforts in Detroit. This grant will enhance the DACC Adoption Program by supporting free spay and neuter operations, microchips, and vaccine services this year.

Detroit Animal Care and Control launched its first ever animal adoption program in 2018 with the strong support and coordination of several local animal response partners, including volunteers from the Friends of the Detroit Animal Care and Control nonprofit. As of May 2019, over 313 animals have been adopted through the City of Detroit’s animal adoption program, advancing progress in the facility’s live release rate. Last year, Detroit Animal Care and Control Officers removed 4,711 stray animals from Detroit neighborhoods

“We are excited to partner with PetSmart Charities and build capacity in our adoption programs,” said Jean Ingersoll, Interim Health Officer of the Detroit Health Department, which oversees Detroit Animal Care and Control. “This grant demonstrates our commitment to growing our adoption program, and addressing public safety concerns and our stray animal population in a sustainable way.”

All animals adopted through Detroit Animal Care and Control receive a comprehensive health and wellness evaluation that includes free sterilization, microchip, current vaccines, free food and other supplies.

“The efforts of Detroit Animal Care and Control to provide homeless pets access to health and wellness care will both prevent thousands of unplanned litters and promote a healthier pet population,” said Deborah Turcott, acting president of PetSmart Charities. “This important work will encourage shorter stays in shelter and ensure these pets have the necessary resources while they wait to find loving homes.”

PetSmart Charities aims to proactively prevent pet homelessness. Since 1994, the organization has granted more than $100 million to support spay and neuter efforts across the United States.

Detroit Animal Care and Control is located at 7401 Chrysler Dr., Detroit, MI 48211. Walk-in adoption hours are 10:30 AM – 3:30 PM, seven days a week or call 313-224-6356.
