About Safe Streets for Detroit (SS4D)
The SS4D (Safe Streets for Detroit) project is a city-led initiative aimed at reducing traffic fatalities and improving street safety and equity.
Why is the project happening? SS4D is a response to a dramatic 88% increase in Detroit’s traffic fatality rate from 2017 to 2020, far exceeding national trends and highlighting the urgent need for action.
This grant builds on Streets for People (SFP), the City of Detroit's visionary Transportation Master Plan, delivering on SFP’s core values:
Delivering on Streets for People Core Values
- Prioritizing Safety
- Equity, Dignity, & Transparency
- Access for All
- Economic Opportunity
- Public Health & Environment
Our Response
Grant: To address this crisis, the City of Detroit applied for and was awarded a $24.8 million Safe Streets for All (SS4A) grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation. This funding supports a citywide effort to redesign streets for safety and accessibility.
Rapid vs. Enhanced
A total of 31 miles of safety improvements will be delivered across 17 priority corridors throughout the city. The work is divided into two safety protective corridors:
Rapid Implementation: Quick-build, lower-cost measures to deliver near-term safety benefits. These include road diets, markings, paint-and-post curb bump-outs, signage, & signal timing improvements. (Construction: 2026-2027)
Enhanced Protection: Permanent infrastructure safety improvements for long term impact. These include curb bump-outs, separated bike lanes, & refuge islands. (Construction: 2026-2027)
Goals
Through the 2022 SS4D Project, the City of Detroit aims to achieve the following goals:
- Reduce crashes on High-Injury Network corridors with targeted, with evidence-based safety improvements.
- Upgrade infrastructure where vulnerable road users are most at risk, including schools and trail crossings.
- Use new safety technologies alongside traditional engineering to improve outcomes.
- Engage communities and track progress to sustain Detroit’s long-term safety efforts.
Timeline
Construction is expected to begin as early as Spring 2026, with completion anticipated by Fall 2027. Evaluation and maintenance activities will continue through 2028.
