Mayor, officials and community celebrate opening of new domed $14M Chandler Park Fieldhouse
- Chandler Park now boasts year-round domed facility, in addition to golf course, water park and skate park among other amenities
- New Chandler Park Fieldhouse offers multiple indoor sports, fitness area, lockers & showers
Mayor Mike Duggan joined residents and community partners to celebrate the grand opening of the new Chandler Park Fieldhouse. Inside the 130,000-square-foot domed facility, visitors will find a turf sports field, multi-sports court, multipurpose rooms, lockers, showers, bathrooms and fitness areas. This is in addition to the 18-hole public golf course, Wayne County’s Family Aquatic Center, and skate park within the 200-acre park. Chandler Park is the city’s fourth largest park.
This state-of-the-art facility fills a recreation center gap on the City’s eastside and allows for year-round fitness and fun in the park. Grand opening festivities included free sports clinics, food trucks, resource tables, and more.
"For decades, all Detroiters saw was recreation facilities closing and being taken away, but that’s all changed,” said Mayor Duggan. “Residents in this area of the eastside have had a great outdoor park for years but have been asking for an indoor facility that offers, year-round activities. The spectacular new Chandler Park Fieldhouse offers that, and I believe will be as busy in January as it will be in June.”

“This dome is a symbol of hope, opportunity and investment in our future,” said Councilmember Latisha Johnson, who represents City of Detroit District 4. “For far too long, families, young people and seniors have waited for a place like this, a place where we can come together, play together, grow stronger together. This dome is more than a field of play, it’s a training ground for discipline, teamwork and leadership—it’s a safe place where our youth can see their potential take shape, where dreams are born and healthier lifestyles are built.”
Construction for this $14 million project started in January 2024 and was funded through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).

“Chandler Park is already a source of fun and memories for Detroiters and this fieldhouse elevates that experience,” said City of Detroit General Services Director Crystal Perkins. “Here in Michigan play takes a pivot in the winter, but this facility will give athletes of all ages and abilities, especially our youth, an opportunity to play, practice and participate in our immersive recreation programming all year long.”
The City of Detroit worked closely with the community on this project, including nonprofit Chandler Park Conservancy that formed in 2014. Throughout the year, Chandler Park Conservancy offers youth camps, skateboarding lessons, sports programing including lacrosse and more at the park.
“The community provided input to the design of the fieldhouse, and we’re grateful to the City of Detroit and General Services Department for making it a reality,” said Alex Allen, President and CEO of Chandler Park Conservancy. “This isn’t just a place for recreation, it’s a place where people of all ages can come together, whether it’s for youth sports, fitness programs, family events, or neighborhood gatherings. It’s about creating a space where residents connect, collaborate, and celebrate the strengths of our community.”
Programming in the Chandler Park fieldhouse will begin Monday, September 8th. The facility will be open Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., closed on Sunday. The process to book this fieldhouse for private events like sports clinics and tournaments starts online through RecTrac, like any other recreation center.
The installation of this fieldhouse comes a year after the City of Detroit updated Chandler Park’s playground. That $1.2 million project also included a nature play area, a large shelter, two medium shelters, and picnic tables.
