As property tax bills arrive in mailboxes across the City, the Detroit Taxpayer Service Center (DTSC) has planned a resource fair to address questions related to property taxes and to provide vital information on programs and other resources that help Detroiters stay in their homes and avoid the risk of foreclosure.
The event will be held Wednesday, July 17, 1PM-3PM on Spirit Plaza at 2 Woodward Ave. in Downtown Detroit.
Attendees can get information about current and delinquent property taxes and get connected to taxpayer resources and programs including the City’s Plan Ahead Program, and the HOPE (Homeowners Property Tax Exemption) program. Detroit’s Assessor office, the Wayne County Treasurer’s Office along with DivDat representatives will be on hand to assist residents.
Residents can get information on:
- Current and delinquent property taxes
- Plan Ahead Savings Program (City of Detroit)
- HOPE Program (Board of Review
- Convenient ways to pay taxes
- IRSPA Program (Interest Reduction Stipulated Payment Agreement)
- Pay as you Stay
- Department of Appeals and Hearings
- Applying for a Treasury Clearance
- Exemptions and more.
Since 2015, the number of owner-occupied homes lost to County tax foreclosure dropped by nearly 95%, in large part because of these programs. The City, however, wants to lower those numbers even more.
“We’ve held our taxpayer resource fairs on the west side, the east side and in southwest Detroit. This time we’re looking to bring all neighborhoods together for an event on Spirit Plaza. In a fun environment we want to connect with Detroit property taxpayers to share vital information about assistance and other resources that will help in maintaining home ownership,” said Nikhil Patel, Deputy CFO, Treasurer.
Summer property taxes are due August 31 and Winter property taxes were due January 15. Anyone who is behind on their taxes or having difficulty staying current should attend this event. Homeowners should be prepared to share an address or parcel number.
