CeaseFire Street Engagement

PURPOSE

To work together with gang and group members throughout the City of Detroit in the establishing of non-violent conflict resolution and presentation of resources that may be of use.

Street Engagement is a crucial component of the Ceasefire model, aimed at preventing violence and promoting peace within communities. It involves trained engagement workers who engage directly with individuals involved in or at risk of engaging in violence. These engagement workers, often from the same communities they serve, establish relationships of trust and provide support, guidance, and resources to help individuals choose non-violent paths.

Street Engagement typically takes place in areas known for high levels of violence, such as neighborhoods affected by gang activity or other forms of criminality. Engagement workers actively seek out individuals involved in violence, offering them alternatives and opportunities to break free from the cycle of violence. This may include assistance with finding employment, education, or counseling services. By connecting with individuals on a personal level, Street Engagement aims to address the root causes of violence, such as poverty, lack of opportunities, and social marginalization.

Additionally, engagement workers serve as mediators, facilitating communication and dialogue between conflicting parties to prevent further escalation of violence. The Street Engagement component of the Ceasefire model recognizes the importance of community-based solutions and empowers individuals to make positive choices, ultimately helping to reduce violence and build safer and more harmonious communities.
