- Mayor Sheffield gave away 1,500 coats to Detroit’s youth in annual coat giveaway
Mayor Mary Sheffield distributed 1,500 coats to Detroit youth during her fifth annual Covering the Community Coat Giveaway on Saturday at the Joseph Walker Williams Recreation Center. In partnership with The HOPE Detroit, the initiative provided essential winter clothing to help families prepare for the colder months.
For 12 years, Mayor Sheffield served Detroit on City Council, building relationships with residents, listening to families and advancing efforts to address community needs. Throughout her public service, initiatives like the Covering the Community Coat Giveaway have reflected her commitment to supporting Detroit’s children and ensuring families have access to essential resources.
Now, as Mayor of Detroit, Sheffield continues that commitment by carrying forward a tradition of service rooted in compassion and community. The annual coat giveaway reflects the importance of ensuring children have the resources they need to enter the colder months prepared and reminding families that they have the support of their community.

"This is an important event that a lot of families look forward to coming to," Mayor Sheffield said. "It’s just another way that we can make sure our residents are taken care of, so I’m excited we get to carry something that meant so much to me during my time in council, over to my administration."
"The HOPE Detroit’s love language is: 'God uses people to meet the needs of people,'" Jerel Bland, Executive Director of The HOPE Detroit said, "Our city has a leader in Mayor Sheffield who has been doing that for years and sincerely cares about actually trying to help people! Partnering with her administration to lift burden in the simplest way possible is a no-brainer."
