The Detroit Water & Sewerage Department (DWSD) is replacing several water mains in 2018 as part of its multi-year capital improvement program. The locations chosen are based on engineering studies: The number of breaks, useful life of the main, pressure evaluations, and other criteria. DWSD will communicate with residents and businesses on the scheduled streets before, during and after construction.

The Detroit Water & Sewerage Department (DWSD) is replacing several water mains in 2018 as part of its multi-year capital improvement program. The locations chosen are based on engineering studies: The number of breaks, useful life of the main, pressure evaluations, and other criteria. DWSD will communicate with residents and businesses on the scheduled streets before, during and after construction.

Scheduled water main replacement projects for 2018 include:

  • West Outer Drive (several sections between Southfield and Wyoming);
  • Lahser from Seven Mile and Eight Mile;
  • Berg between Vassar and Leewin;
  • Oakman from Joy to Grand River;
  • Biltmore between Fenkell to McNichols;
  • Mansfield from Fenkell to Florence;
  • Murray Hill between Fenkell to Florence;
  • Fenkell from Bentler to Virgil;
  • Five Points between Seven Mile to Eight Mile; and
  • Schaefer from West Chicago to Westfield.

 

In addition, DWSD is renewing the sewer system in the Jefferson Chalmers neighborhood this summer. And, DWSD crews will be across the city this spring, summer and fall to inspect and clean 10,000 catch basins to reduce flooding.

DWSD is embarking on a five-year, $500 million capital improvement program to begin to rehabilitate the water and sewer infrastructure in Detroit. As the engineers finalize construction plans, this information will be shared in future customer communications.
