Detroit Firefighter Patrick Trout’s death officially ruled Line of Duty death

2026

The Detroit Fire Department announces with profound sorrow the death of Firefighter Patrick “Pat” Trout, a 12-year veteran assigned to Squad 4, has been officially ruled a Line of Duty Death following the final report from the Macomb County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Firefighter Trout, 47, died at his home on January 5, 2026, after completing a 24-hour shift that ended earlier that day. His passing represents a tremendous loss for the department, the City of Detroit, and the community he served with unwavering dedication.

Funeral services have already been held, where family, friends, and fellow firefighters gathered to honor a life defined by service, sacrifice, and compassion.

A Life Defined by Service

Patrick Trout was a devoted husband to Shannon and proud father to his son, Jackson, roles he cherished above all else. He was also a beloved son, brother, and friend whose kindness and humor left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.

Beyond the fire service, Trout was a Purple Heart recipient and U.S. Army veteran, serving his country with honor before continuing his life of service in Detroit.

Within Squad 4, he was known for his compassion, camaraderie, and the close bonds he shared with his fellow firefighters. Colleagues remember his daily gestures of warmth and encouragement, which strengthened the tight-knit culture of the company.

Throughout his career, Firefighter Trout consistently placed others before himself. Whether responding to emergencies or supporting his fellow firefighters, he exemplified the highest ideals of the fire service.

He was among the DFD members who worked tirelessly during the Southwest Detroit water main break in 2025, rescuing residents from their homes and putting others first — as he always did.

“The Detroit Fire Department mourns the loss of Firefighter Patrick Trout, whose life was defined by service to his country, his city, and his fellow firefighters,” said Executive Fire Commissioner Chuck Simms, who spoke at Trout’s funeral. “He was a devoted family man, a Purple Heart veteran, and a firefighter who led with compassion and courage. We will forever honor his sacrifice and stand beside his family in remembrance and gratitude.”

The Detroit Fire Department continues to keep Firefighter Trout’s wife, son, family, loved ones, and his brothers and sisters in the department in its thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Additional memorial recognitions may be announced at a later date.
