City Office of Cannabis Affairs distributes sleeping bag, coats during Detroit Unsheltered Street Census
On January 29, 2025, the City of Detroit Office of Cannabis Affairs (OCA) joined forces with The Empowerment Plan and the Housing Revitalization Department (HRD) to distribute essential supplies during the annual Detroit Unsheltered Homeless Survey, including distributing 107 sleeping bag coats purchased with funds donated by licensed cannabis businesses in Detroit.
The OCA team, alongside volunteers from various city departments and community organizations, canvassed designated areas to count and connect with individuals experiencing homelessness. In addition to conducting the census, volunteers distributed vital resources such as:
- Sleeping bag coats: Designed to provide warmth and protection from the
elements. - Hygiene kits: Containing essential toiletries for personal care.
- Warm clothing: Including hats, gloves, and socks to combat the cold
weather. - Available resources: Such as shelters, food banks, and
healthcare services.
"We are committed to supporting Detroit organizations that provide services for our most vulnerable residents" said Kim James, OCA Director. "We are thrilled with the generosity shown by the Detroit cannabis community, and collaborating with Empowerment Plan and HRD allowed us to assist with
addressing critical needs of individuals experiencing homelessness in Detroit."
The unsheltered census provides crucial data to inform the allocation of resources and services for the homeless population. By partnering with community organizations and agencies, the City of Detroit aims to improve the lives of those experiencing homelessness and work towards a more equitable and inclusive city for all.
