The City of Detroit set to offer free summer recreation center membership passes to Detroit teens and young adults
- Detroit recreation centers look to provide a safe haven for residents
- Ten recreation centers across the City are offering dozens of programs and activities to Detroiters
For the first time, the City of Detroit General Services Department, Recreation Division is offering free summer passes for teens and young adults to gain membership access to recreation centers across the city. Detroit residents ages 13-24 can take advantage of a wide variety of resources, activities, and programs free of charge.
“We have so many teens and young adults in the city, but limited summer activities available for them,” said Keith Flournoy, Deputy Director of the Detroit Recreation Division. “We hope that by offering these free memberships, we lay a foundation for a stronger community inside and outside the recreation centers.”
Residents can sign up for free summer membership passes at their local recreation center. Passes are universal and will allow access to any Detroit recreation center from Monday, June 12, until Saturday, September 30. The Recreation Division stresses that this is part of a greater push the City has been working on to create more opportunities for residents to find their fun. These free memberships are another way to have “fun in the D,” with activities and programs available for the entire family.
Every center has free internet access and air conditioning to amplify recreational experiences. In addition, free food services are available to school-aged children during the summer. With ten different recreation centers across the City, each one offers a unique and individual experience based on its given district that provides neighbors opportunities to engage in their community.
“The recreation centers, and specifically these free memberships, give opportunities to try new activities and things that our community may not have previously had access to,” added Flournoy.
Flournoy emphasized that job opportunities are also available for teens and young adults looking to engage within the community.
Activities offered at recreation centers include:
- Basketball Courts
- Swimming Pools
- Football Fields
- Soccer Fields
- Tennis Courts
- Gymnasiums
- Computer Labs
- Dance Studios
- Playscapes
- Game Rooms
- Splash Pads
- Access to Parks connected to our Rec Centers
