The City of Detroit will conduct a test of its Outdoor Warning Siren System this Saturday, August 1, at 1 p.m. The City of Detroit has 56 outdoor warning sirens throughout the city, covering each of the city’s 7 districts. The siren system is tested on the first Saturday of each month at 1 pm.  

The Outdoor Warning Sirens, which are designed to be heard outdoors, not indoors, are used by public safety officials as a warning method in the event of severe weather, an emergency, or a national disaster.

If you ever hear the sirens outside of the testing period, take the following steps:

• Go indoors as quickly as possible to an interior, windowless room on the lowest level.  
• Tune in to local media to learn about the type of emergency and follow official instructions.
• Continue to monitor the media, and emergency notifications on your phone, for updates.
