Tanya Stoudemire has been confirmed as Detroit’s next Chief Financial Officer in a unanimous vote by City Council this week. Appointed last month by Mayor Duggan to the acting position, Stoudemire succeeds Jay Rising, who retired in April after serving as CFO since 2021. Stoudemire leaves her position as Chief Deputy CFO where for the last four years she served as a trusted policy liaison between City Council and the Administration.

Both Rising and Stoudemire were integral in the City’s historic return to investment grade status, ensuring fiscal discipline through balanced budgets. Under their leadership, OCFO effectively managed the City’s allocated $826.7 million in American Rescue Plan Act funds, the largest federal grant in Detroit’s history.

Stoudemire has 30 years of distinguished service to the City spending half her career in Detroit’s Budget Department and later the Office of the Chief Financial Officer where she excelled as Deputy CFO/Budget Director for 6 years. During this pivotal time, Stoudemire played a crucial part in guiding the office through the City’s emergence from bankruptcy, where her efforts were concentrated on building resilient and sustainable budgets that prioritized long-term financial stability. Also, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Stoudemire managed a cost savings plan that preserved the City’s financial solvency while ensuring the necessary resources were available to combat the virus, fostering strong partnerships with various City departments and external local, state, and federal agencies

“I am honored to be appointed by Mayor Duggan as the Chief Financial Officer and confirmed by Detroit City Council.  It is a privilege to work with such a great team in the Office of the Chief Financial Officer and across City departments for the residents of the great City of Detroit. As CFO, I look forward to continuing our mission to maintain a financial infrastructure that results in balanced budgets and long-term sustainability - all while enabling the City to make investments that improve the quality of life for Detroiters,” said CFO Tanya Stoudemire.

Mayor Duggan expressed confidence in Stoudemire's leadership, stating, “Her extensive experience and commitment to financial excellence will be invaluable as we continue to strive to provide the excellent service Detroiters expect and deserve.”

Stoudemire becomes the first woman CFO for the City of Detroit. She is married with three children and has a Juris Doctorate and Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Wayne State University.
