Detroit Benchmarking Ordinance: Summer 2025 Data Jams

2025
The City of Detroit's Office of Sustainability and the Detroit 2030 District are hosting a Summer series of Data Jams for building owners and managers who are not yet in compliance.

The Benchmarking Ordinance has a due date of June 1st, 2025. Building owners and Managers that missed the compliance deadline are invited to join the Office of Sustainability at a technical assistance event series on August 12th and August 13th.

What happens in a Data Jam?

The Office of Sustainability will present the ordinance and walkthrough steps to compliance. Then, volunteers will offer one-on-one technical support to building owners. By the time the event ends, attendees should be in compliance with the ordinance, or on the path to compliance.

Why is benchmarking important?

Buildings in Detroit have the highest opportunity for energy reduction.

Benchmarking is the first step to identifying that potential.

In November of 2023, Detroit City Council unanimously passed the Benchmarking Ordinance, requiring buildings with over 25,000 square feet of space to annually report their energy and water usage to the City.

Check your building size and see if your building is required to report at this link.
