Extreme cold temperatures can cause Hypothermia. Hypothermia is dangerous and can be caused by prolonged exposure to cold temperatures.

Do your best to stay warm and inside when temperatures fall below freezing (32 degrees).

If you must go outside remember to:

  • Wear multiple layers of loose-fitting clothing. Wear an extra shirt or thermal layer for warmth.
  • Always wear a head covering, like a hat and/or scarf, when outdoors.
  • Keep your extremities covered. Hypothermia sets in to your fingers and toes faster. Wear gloves and thick socks.
  • If possible use hand and toe warmers.
  • Drink plenty of fluids and stay hydrated.
  • Check on those who are the most vulnerable, including children, the elderly and/or chronically ill.

Other Tips for Keeping Safe in Cold Weather:

  • Keep space heaters and candles at least 3 feet away from flammable materials, such as curtains, furniture and clothing. These things can catch fire fast and cause a home fire.
  • Check your carbon monoxide detector and make sure it’s working.
  • Do not use stoves or generators as a source of heat. They may cause fire or carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Do not leave your car running in a closed space such as a garage.
  • Provide appropriate shelter for domestic animals. If the weather outside is too cold for a human, it is too cold for a pet.
  • Take special consideration if you’re waiting for the bus to keep warm. Dress in layers and be safe while waiting at the bus stop area.
