The Financial Empowerment Center (FEC) offers free, one-on-one financial counseling to help Detroit residents manage money, reduce debt, and plan for the future.

You can get help with:

• Budgeting and money management
• Paying down debt and dealing with collectors
• Building or improving credit
• Establishing savings goals
• Finding safe, affordable banking options
• Life and Legacy Planning - to protect your assets

FEC counselors are trained professionals who can help develop achievable financial goals and connect you with other resources. There are no income or residency requirements.  Interpreters are available on request.

What to Expect
Your first session lasts about 60 minutes (longer if you come with a partner).
You and your counselor will:

• Review your income, spending, savings, and debts
• Create a simple budget to get started 
• Work with you to develop a plan that fits your goals for debt reduction, credit building, savings, or banking access
• Get a free credit report (optional)

Helpful to bring:

• Government issued ID card 
• Pay stub and all sources of income
• Bank statements
• Bills
• Social Security number

The Detroit FEC is a partnership between the City of Detroit, Wayne Metro Community Action Agency, and Matrix Human Services, with support from the Cities for Financial Empowerment Fund.
