City of Detroit Earth Month 2022

The City of Detroit Office of Sustainability has collaborated with many city departments and partner organizations to put together this calendar of great events for Earth Month!

Come to as many as you can!

Earth Week Lunch and Learns

Join us all week on the City’s Facebook Page for Lunch and Learns about Sustainability related topics:

  • Monday, April 18th: 12:00 noon: Empowering Digital Detroit 
    Learn more about this exciting initiative to put refurbished computers and devices into the hands of Detroit youth, improving access to technology while reducing the waste that goes to landfill.  
  • Tuesday, April 19th: 12:00 noon: What can I do in my home to prevent flooding?
    The Detroit Water and Sewerage Department and the Eastside Community Network will share the details on the programs being implemented to reduce the impacts of flooding on homes.  
  • Wednesday, April 20th: 12:00 noon: Detroit Solar Toolkit and Local Solar Projects.
    Join us to learn more about the Detroit Solar Toolkit and interesting solar projects in our community with leaders from City Council Green Task Force and the community.  
  • Thursday, April 21st: 12:00 noon: Sustainability in City Parks and Rec Centers:
    Join staff from the General Services dept as they talk about several projects currently underway and the exciting sustainability components that range from green stormwater infrastructure to solar and battery backups. 
  • Friday, April 22nd: 12:00 noon: Recycling and Community Gardens:
    Councilmember Santiago-Romero will host speakers from Keep Growing Detroit and Green Living Science. They’ll chat about recycling basics, community gardens, and more!

GET A TREE IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD

Request a Tree!

Did you know that trees have multiple benefits for neighborhoods, including cooler temperatures, reducing pollution, and promoting active lifestyles?

All trees will be planted this Spring for free through Mayor Duggan’s 10,000 Up Tree Planting Initiative. Fill out your street tree planting request or request a tree by emailing Angel Squalls at [email protected].

CLEANER GREENER DETROIT

Detroit City Council Green Task Force

Join us on Saturday, April 23th, from 10:00-12:00 pm, as we honor Earth Day by awarding Detroit's environmental champions. The Detroit Green Task Force will be located in Pavilion 8W, 99 Pleasure Rd just before Inselruhe Ave. A boxed lunch will be provided for attendees.

Clean and Green Parks for All! 

Our park’s maintenance staff work hard to keep the parks clean, but we all need to pitch in to make sure that our neighborhood parks are clean and green for all!

Palmer Park Clean-up  

Sat, April 23, 2022 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM  

Spring is upon us and we want Palmer Park to look beautiful and vibrant for the wonderful community of people who enjoy the park. Trash pick-up, weeding, sweeping, raking, and clearing are just some of the ways to volunteer your time and energy! People for Palmer Park will be providing gloves, trash bags, hand- sanitizer, and light refreshments. Please bring your own water bottle!

Birds

Enjoy the beauty of Spring in Detroit!  

See, smell and hear the signs of spring at Eliza Howell Park on Weds, April 20th at 6pm.  This nature walk will be led by Naturalist Leonard Weber and Detroit Parks and Recreation.  We will meet about 1/2 way around the mile loop road. 
Wear sturdy shoes ready and get for some possibly muddy trails! We will bring a few pairs of binoculars to borrow.  See more.

Easter Fun Fest 

If you are looking for some Easter fun for all ages, please join us at Easter Fun Fest on April 16th from 10:00am-3:00pm at Laskey Recreation Center! There will be tons of great activities from Easter egg hunts, a petting zoo, face painting, a mobile bowling alley, pictures with the Easter bunny, and more! Please register and we hope to see you there!  

Motor City Makeover 

The City of Detroit Motor City Makeover kicks off in District 1 May 7th. Registration opens April 1 - Sign up @ motorcitymakeover.org.

Sustainability Action Agenda Update

The Detroit Sustainability Action Agenda made history in 2019 as the first sustainability plan for the City. This year we are pleased to highlight our progress towards the 10 goals outlined in this document, informed by conversations with over 6,000 Detroiters.
