The mission of Detroit Animal Care is to promote and protect the health, safety, and welfare of the residents and visitors of the City of Detroit from animal bites, zoonotic disease, or traffic hazards; to maintain the highest standards of humane animal sheltering; to promote the placement of animals into homes; and to encourage responsible pet ownership through education, enforcement, and community partnership.

Detroit Animal Care Services
- Animal Intake and Care: Shelter staff receives and care for stray, lost, surrendered, or confiscated animals, ensuring they are housed in a safe and humane environment.
- Adoption Services: The shelter facilitates the adoption of pets into responsible, loving homes through application screening, meet-and-greet sessions, and follow-up support.
- Lost and Found Pet Assistance: The shelter helps reunite lost pets with their owners by maintaining a database of lost and found reports and housing animals for reclaim.
- Stray animals are held for seven days if they have evidence of ownership (collar, tag, microchip, etc) upon impound. Otherwise, they are held for four days.
- Veterinary and Medical Services: Onsite veterinarians provide vaccinations, spay/neuter surgeries, microchipping, and treatment for illness or injury.
- Community Outreach and Education: The shelter offers educational programs, volunteer opportunities, and public resources to promote responsible pet ownership and animal welfare.
- Licensing and Registration: The shelter issues and manages pet licenses as required by city regulations, helping to ensure proper identification of pets.
Adoptions take place daily at Detroit Animal Care from 10:30 AM – 5:30 PM located at 1431 E Ferry St, Detroit, MI 48211.
All dogs and cats are spayed or neutered and come with a their first set of initial vaccines, a microchip, collar, leash (for dogs), supply of food, and goodie bag with treats.
