Internship Experience Program
Bachelor and graduate-level students may participate in public health projects as part of our Workforce Development Internship Experience Initiative to gain experience in public health practice through structured learning and engagement in one of our programs. Please note that these opportunities are unpaid unless otherwise specified.
Internship Experience Program Opportunities:
- Apply academic training to tackle real-world public health issues
- Better understand how local health departments protect the public’s health
- Gain public health skills, workforce experience, or explore potential public health careers
- Connect with the community to provide services and promote health
- Network and connect with Detroit Health Department staff and community partners
Projects are based on student and preceptor need, and all submissions are screened and matched based on experience three times a year. If you are interested in completing a project to fulfill internship or practicum graduation requirements, please specify what requirements the project experience must fulfill when submitting the Student Interest Form.
Application Deadlines
Students must submit a Student Interest Form with a resume and participate in interviews. Applicants will receive placement decisions by the listed deadlines for each term.
Spring/Summer (May–Aug)
Form due 1st Friday in April; interviews 3rd week of April; notification by April 30.
Fall (Sept–Dec)
Form due 1st Friday in August; interviews 3rd week of August; notification by August 31.
Winter (Jan–Apr)
Form due 3rd Friday of November; interviews 1st week of December; notification by December 15.
