ELECTRICAL CONTRACTOR PERMIT:
Applicant must either be a Licensed City of Detroit Electrical Contractor or a current and valid Registered State of Michigan or Grand Rapids Electrical Contractor, in order to obtain an electrical permit. If you are uncertain whether you are currently Licensed or Registered with the City of Detroit, please call the Electrical Inspection Division at (313) 628-2661 for further assistance.
The permit application must be filled out in its entirety, except where noted.
Documentation Required:
•Electrical Permit Application
•Current and valid City of Detroit Electrical Contractor's License or current and valid City of Detroit Electrical Contractor's Registration (for State of Michigan or Grand Rapids Contractors)
•Supporting documents from the business/employer that will have the business Tax Id (if provided on application)
•Supporting document from the business/employer proving Workers Compensation Insurance Carrier information (if provided on application)
•Supporting document from the business/employer that will have the business MESC number (if provided on application).
Permit applications may be submitted by mail only if the Electrical Contractor is currently Licensed or Registered with the City of Detroit.
The permit by mail process approximately takes 5-10 business days, and the permit will be mailed back to the applicant.

ELECTRICAL SERVICE RECONNECT PERMIT: If a service reconnect permit is required, then the applicant does not need to renew/register with the City of Detroit. But, the applicant must speak directly to the Electrical Supervisor in the Electrical Division office before the permit may be obtained:

ELECTRICAL HOMEOWNER'S PERMIT: If a homeowner's permit is required, the applicant must be living in the residence (single family only) where the work is being performed. The applicant must sign an affidavit (provided on the permit application) that the electrical work for which the permit is being obtained, will be performed only by the homeowner. • Valid and current Driver's License or State Identification. Passports are not accepted.
• Permit application filled out in its entirety except where noted.
OWNER'S AFFIDAVIT PERMIT
In the case of industrial, commercial, or institutional employment, the Affidavit and/or Owner's Affidavit is used in lieu of an Electrical Contractor's License. If a Owner'sAffidavit Permit is required, the facility is required to have a current and valid Master Electrician in order to obtain this permit. The applicant must speak with the Electrical Supervisor in Room 408 before the permit may be obtained.
Documentation Required:
• Owner Affidavit Permit Application
• Current and valid Master Electrician's License
• A list of employees supervised by the Master electrician, presented on notarized company letterhead, and signed by the Master of Record
Step 2: Submit application to the Licenses & Permits Division with proper documentation and fees.
If Applicant is a Contractor:
The Licenses and Permits Division verifies the Electrical Contractor is registered with the City of Detroit, accepts payment, processes the permit application, and provides applicant with the permit.
If Applicant is a Homeowner:
Applicant is to take the application directly to the Electrical Plan Reviewer for verification of residency in the City of Detroit. The applicant will then take the approved application to the Licenses and Permits Division along with required fees. The Licenses and Permits Division processes the permit application, accepts payment, and provides applicant with the permit.
Step 3: The Licenses and Permits Division is responsible for the approval of the Electrical Permit Application, unless there are discrepancies (See note below). The Licenses and Permits Division will provide the applicant with the assigned Permit Number and approved application.
Note: If there is any discrepancy in the application and/or documentation submitted, the Licenses and Permits Cashier will forward the application and/or documentation (if application was mailed) to the Electrical Division in Room 408 for review and approval, or direct the applicant (if application is made in person) to go to the Electrical Division to obtain approval from the Electrical Supervisor:

Step 4: Once the approval is obtained, the applicant will be responsible for paying all associated fees to the:

Note: Make checks (starter checks are not accepted) payable to: Treasury City of Detroit. Other payment methods accepted are cash, credit cards (Master Card, Visa or Discover only), money orders, and cashier's checks.

Step 5: After the fees have been paid, the cashier will issue the electrical permit and a paid receipt to the applicant.
