The applicant MUST be a resident of the City of Detroit. If you reside outside the City of Detroit, please contact the State of Michigan's Licensing Division.
Documentation Required:
- A current City of Detroit Journeyperson License Application. The application must be filled out in its entirety, except where noted. Obsolete forms will not be accepted.
- A passport-sized photo of the applicant.
- Proof of residency. (e.g.; State of Michigan Driver's License)
- Original and notarized letter(s) on company letterhead from applicant's employer(s), attesting to not less than 8,000 hours of practical experience obtained over a period of not less than four years related to electrical construction, maintenance of buildings, or electrical wiring or equipment under the direct supervision of a person licensed by the City of Detroit or the State of Michigan. Do not include overtime hours in your accumulation of time from the employer. Paycheck stubs are NOT considered valid documents.
- Submit proof of valid Apprentice Registrations coinciding with all hours of practical experience.
Step 1:
The Journeyperson application and all required documentation must be submitted to the Electrical Inspection Division in Room 408. You may also mail your application to the office at the following address:

Step 2:
All initial examination applications must be reviewed and approved by the Board of Electrical Examiners before an examination may be scheduled.
Step 3:
Once reviewed by the Board, the applicant will be notified of the Board's decision in writing.
Step 4:
IF DENIED: The applicant will be sent a denial letter and must submit the requested revisions to the Electrical Inspection Division for Board review and approval. After re-review the applicant will be notified of the Board's decision in writing.
IF APPROVED: The applicant will be sent an approval letter and an examination fee invoice with examination scheduling instructions.
Step 5:
The applicant will take the examination on the scheduled date and time. EXAMINATION RESULTS WILL NOT BE GIVEN OVER THE TELEPHONE.
Step 6:
An examination score letter will be sent to the applicant.
IF THE APPLICANT FAILS: The applicant must re-pay the examination fee and re-schedule for the next available examination date. Please note: If the examination is failed twice within a two-year period there will be a one-year wait from the date of the second examination date. In addition, proof of successful completion of a course on code, electrical fundamentals, or electrical theory must be submitted to the Board of Electrical Examiners for review and approval in order for the applicant to sit for reexamination.
IF THE APPLICANT PASSES: The applicant will be sent an invoice for payment of the Journeyperson License.
Step 7:
Applicant must pay the Journeyperson License fee.
Step 8:
Upon payment, the Journeyperson License will be issued to the applicant.
