Smoke Detectors

Smoke Alarm Program

The Detroit Fire Department has installed smoke alarms for residents free of charge for years, but this year is announcing the launch of a large-scale smoke alarm installation initiative. Through October 2025, the Detroit Fire Department will be working to install 5000 smoke alarms in Detroit homes. DFD members will install three to five smoke alarms in each home, depending on size and need. The only requirement is that you are a resident of Detroit. Through this initiative, we plan to equip between 1000-1600 homes in the City of Detroit with working smoke alarms. If you can't make it to the Fire Prevention Week events, you can request smoke alarm installation for your home by calling DFD’s Community Relations Division at 313.596.2900 or e-mail [email protected]. Change Your Clock - Change Your Battery

When the Daylight Saving Time clock change approaches, the Detroit Fire Department reminds residents to make another change that could save lives — changing the batteries in their smoke alarms. The Detroit Fire Department annually urges the public to adopt this simple life safety habit.
