Council Member Angela Whitfield Calloway introduced the Youth & Civic Engagement (YCE) Task Force by resolution during her first term in office. She recognized that Detroit needed to play a more active role in preparing its youth to lead, by giving them access to civic education, opportunities to participate in local government, and a platform to make their voices heard. Civic engagement means more than voting. It is about developing the knowledge, skills, values, and motivation to make a real difference in the community. YCE was created to ensure Detroit’s youth, especially those who have historically faced barriers to civic participation, are empowered to become active leaders in shaping the city’s future. Through workshops, volunteer opportunities, and hands-on programs, the task force equips participants to advocate for policy change, promote inclusion, and strengthen Detroit’s civic life.
