Promotion of Transportation Safety

Walking, Biking, and Driving Safely in Detroit

The Safe Routes Ambassador Program as part of the Detroit Health Department is dedicated to enhancing pedestrian and bicycle safety by providing practical, skills-based traffic safety training to reduce the number of fatalities and serious injuries resulting from car, bike and pedestrian accidents.

Why Safety Matters
Our mission is to educate the community on safe and legal road and sidewalk use, increase accessibility to alternative transportation options, and support physical activity in neighborhoods.  Simply put, we educate people on how to stay safe when walking, biking and driving in Detroit.

What We Do
Our team visits schools, afterschool programs, senior centers, and community events. We teach people how to stay safe by:

  • Giving fun and hands-on lessons

  • Teaching how to cross the street safely

  • Showing how to ride a bike the right way

  • Helping drivers learn how to share the road

  • Leading safe walks and bike rides

  • Giving away helpful items like bike lights, water bottles, and reflectors

  • Offering free or low-cost MoGo bike passes

We can visit in person or online. We want to work with you to make our streets safer for everyone.
