Derek Hillman

Second Deputy Commissioner

Derek Hillman was appointed Second Deputy Commissioner in 2022, where he now oversees personnel across three divisions. In this capacity, Hillman played a pivotal role in merging Fire and EMS Divisions, leading Detroit’s entry into the Mi-MABAS system and securing the passage of the Ground Emergency Medical Transportation legislation and is responsible for key projects including integration of new technology to the DFD, creating and implementing policy changes, and working to improve the City of Detroit’s ISO rating. 
Hillman also oversees upgrades to Detroit’s 38 facilities, in collaboration with the city’s Construction and Demolition Department.

Hillman started his career in fire service in November of 1996 and before joining the Detroit Fire Department as Director of Special Projects in 2014, served as Chief of Highland Park Fire Department, where he secured funding for and oversaw the construction of a new fire station.

Hillman earned both a bachelor's and master’s degrees in business administration and is currently pursuing his doctorate in Public Administration, exemplifying his commitment to serving the citizens of Detroit.
