BSEED issues permits for major repairs and renovations in the areas of Building, Electrical, Mechanical and Plumbing. If you are working with a contractor, the contractor will typically handle all of the necessary permitting on your behalf.

When identifying a contractor to use for needed property repairs or improvements, it is critical you do your due diligence in finding an experienced professional. Choosing the wrong contractor could cost you money and time, and threaten the success of your project. Be sure to ask any prospective contractor for proof of required licensing and insurance.

Contractors are required to :

  •  Be registered to do business in the City of Detroit
  •  Hold property liability insurance
  •  Hold workers compensation insurance

  1. Get references. Contact the Better Business Bureau and other business review websites like Angie's List.
  2. Search trade association websites for various contracting needs. The Home Builders Association of Southeaster Michigan provides a list of businesses covering a wide range of services in Wayne County and surrounding areas.
  3. Confirm the business is properly licensed and registered. Check to see if the contractor is licensed by the State of Michigan and registered with the City of Detroit.
  4. Confirm that the business has a certificate of good standing. Visit the State of Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs website to make sure the business entity has a good standing.
