What should I do if I don't have letters of experience?

Please contact the Board Secretary for further assistance.  Please note that you may have to present your case to the Board, in which case, a board hearing application will have to be submitted and approved by the Acting Chairman.

 

 

If I originally or previously held my license(s) in Detroit, but now reside in another city, can I still renew my License(s) in Detroit?

No. If you reside outside the City of Detroit, you must renew your License(s) with the State of Michigan.

How do I request a hearing before the board?

A Board Hearing Request application must be submitted to the Board Secretary and approved by the Acting Chairman before a hearing may be granted. The Acting Chairman's decision will be sent to you via email and postal mail. For further assistance, please contact the Secretary.

Can you recommend an exam prep course?

The Board nor the Electrical Inspection Division can recommend exam prep courses. State of Michigan approved courses and providers can be found on C.E. Broker

I'm renewing my apprentice registration, what documentation do I need?

The following is required EVERY time you RENEW your Apprentice Registration:

  1. A current City of Detroit Apprentice Registration application. Please Note: Obsolete forms WILL NOT be accepted.
  2. A notarized letter form your current employer(s).
  3. Proof of residency.
  4. Submit documentation of current and valid participation in a bona fide Apprentice Training Program as approved by the Board.
My license has expired, how do I renew it?
  • If your license is expired for three (3) years or more, a reexamination is required. Please contact the Board Secretary for further assistance. 
  • If your license is expired for LESS THAN three (3) years, please note a late fee will apply. Please contact the Electrical Inspection Division clerical staff at (313) 224-3202 for further assistance.
I recently took an electrical exam, when will I find out the results?

Electrical examination results will be sent to you in writing once scored by the Electrical Examiner. 
TEST RESULTS WILL NOT BE GIVEN OVER THE TELEPHONE.

I've been contracted to do work in the City of Detoit, but my company is located outside the state of Michigan. How do I register to do work within the City of Detroit?

The most expedient way is to contact the State of Michigan's Licensing Division to obtain a State of Michigan Electrical Contractor's License. Once you have obtained the aforementioned license, you may register with the City of Detroit's Electrical Inspection Division. 

Is my license/apprentice registration valid outside the City of Detroit?

Yes. City of Detroit Licenses and Apprentice Registrations are valid within the State of Michigan and are equivalent to those issued by the State of Michigan.

I've failed the Journeyman or Master exam twice and I now have a one year wait. Where can I find the required approved code and/or theory course(s)?
