Detroit families can now apply for Rx Kids, a direct cash assistance program that provides financial support during pregnancy and throughout a baby’s first six months of life.
The program, launched through a partnership between the City of Detroit, Michigan State University and GiveDirectly, provides direct financial assistance to pregnant mothers and families with newborns during one of the most financially critical times in life.
Detroit is now the largest city in the country participating in the Rx Kids program.
What Is Rx Kids?
Rx Kids is a community-wide cash assistance program that provides direct payments to eligible mothers during pregnancy and throughout a baby’s first six months of life.
Eligible Detroit families can receive:
- $1,500 during pregnancy
- $500 per month for the baby’s first six months
The payments are direct cash assistance with no restrictions on how families use the money.
The program is designed to help families cover essential expenses such as:
- Rent and housing costs
- Baby supplies
- Utilities
- Transportation
- Groceries and household needs
Mayor Mary Sheffield said the program reflects the city’s commitment to supporting families and creating opportunities for Detroit children from the very beginning of life.
“Detroit is among the nation’s leaders in investing in our babies,” Mayor Sheffield said.
