TIZ Permit FAQs

What is the Transportation Innovation Zone (TIZ)?

The TIZ is Detroit’s regulatory real-world deployment site for mobility technology. It provides innovators with a safe, real-world environment to test transportation solutions — supported by streamlined permitting and direct access to City partners.

What is the mission and vision of the TIZ?

Mission: Accelerate innovation by removing barriers and helping companies pilot technologies faster in Detroit. Vision: Position Detroit as the Midwest hub where mobility innovation moves from concept to commercialization.

Where is the TIZ located?

The TIZ covers roughly two square miles around Michigan Central, including Corktown, North Corktown, and Hubbard Richard. The zone spans major corridors such as Michigan Avenue and connects to mobility assets including I-96, I-75, the Detroit River, and U.S.–Canada border crossings.

What are the benefits of participating in the TIZ?
  • Streamlined permitting – Approvals through the Office of Mobility Innovation (OMI).
  • Real-world testing – Access to diverse weather, traffic, and infrastructure conditions.
  • Community integration – Partnerships with local businesses and workforce pipelines.
  • City support – Direct navigation of City processes through a single point of contact.
How does the TIZ permit process work?
  • Submit an OMI Pilot Permit Review (OPPR) application.

  • OMI convenes a review meeting with relevant City departments.

  • Applicants present their project, receive feedback, and refine their proposal.

  • OMI issues final approval, authorizing deployment within the TIZ.

How many companies are currently deploying in the TIZ?

Detroit has already permitted over a dozen pilots in areas such as EV charging, connected vehicle infrastructure, and mobility data systems. This number continues to grow as new projects are approved.

Why should companies choose Detroit for mobility innovation?
  • #1 in the U.S. for automotive manufacturing jobs

  • Highest concentration of engineers in the country

  • Home to 26 OEMs and 96 of the top 100 suppliers

  • $20B+ in EV and battery investments since 2018

  • Fastest path from prototype to market in a major U.S. city
