Our Mission

Detroit Charge Ahead is a citywide initiative focused on expanding access to electric vehicle (EV) charging, advancing sustainable mobility, and supporting Detroit's Climate Strategy. The initiative also advances Michigan's broader decarbonization goals under the MI Healthy Climate Plan and supports the City's Rise Higher mission through strategic, neighborhood-focused infrastructure investment.

The program seeks to expand access to EV charging across the city, support the transition to zero-emission mobility, and strengthen Detroit's leadership in the automotive industry's shift to electrification. The initiative includes the deployment of Level 3/Direct Current Fast Chargers (DCFC) at strategic locations across the city, providing convenient, faster charging options for residents and visitors. To date, the City of Detroit has deployed 50 Level 2 and Level 3 charging ports across 38 Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (EVCS) through American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding, and two additional L2 chargers at the Ford Underground parking garage.

How Are We Charging Detroit's Drive?

These EV charging station investments mark only the beginning of Detroit's broader vision for helping to decarbonize the State's transportation emissions. The City is working toward an innovative transportation future where Detroiters can conveniently access sustainable mobility options near where they live, work, shop and spend time.

A Level 2 charger uses a 240-volt outlet (like a home clothes dryer) and takes 4 to 10 hours to fully charge an electric car. Level 2 EV chargers are designed for longer parking periods, making them convenient for residents and visitors spending time at recreation centers and participating in community programming. A Level 3 charger, also called a DC fast charger, uses high-voltage direct current and can charge a car to 80 percent in 20 to 40 minutes.

Level 2 charging, available at the the City of Detroit recreation centers, is currently free to use, helping reduce barriers to EV adoption while aligning infrastructure investments with neighborhood revitalization and long-term economic growth.

The City’s DC fast chargers are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, allowing drivers to charge while visiting nearby businesses and services.

EV drivers can pay for L3 charging at applicable Direct Current Fast-Charger (DCFC) locations using credit card, QR code, the Red E app, RFID cards, or supported vehicle/OEM network integrations. High-powered DC fast chargers have a usage fee of $0.42 per kWh, with idling fees applicable where indicated. DCFC (L3) rates support a dedicated maintenance and operations fund to help ensure long-term station performance.
