Youth and Education

We provide resources for the next generation of leaders.

The Division of Youth and Education works to ensure every young Detroiter has access to the opportunities, resources and support they need to thrive. Serving residents from birth through age 26, the division connects youth and families with City services, educational opportunities and community programs while coordinating partnerships across schools, organizations and City departments. By centering youth voices in its work, the division helps build a Detroit where every young person can learn, grow and succeed. The division's North Star: To ensure that every young person in our city (ages 0-26) has access to opportunity— inside and outside of school, beyond high school and well into young adulthood.

Day One Ready -- Student School Enrollment Directory

Day One Ready is a citywide effort to help families confirm their child’s enrollment and remove barriers that can lead to missed school. Find your child’s school or district below and take the next step to make sure they are ready for the first day.

Ride to Rise: Show ID, Students Ride Free

Detroit students in kindergarten through 12th grade can ride DDOT buses for free through Ride to Rise — no fare, special pass or application required. The program is designed to remove transportation barriers that can keep young Detroiters from getting to and from school, jobs and other opportunities.

To help students travel safely, 20–25 Ride to Rise Ambassadors will maintain a visible, welcoming presence on buses, at transit centers and near high school bus stops during peak travel times. They will be supported by DDOT, DPD’s Transit Unit, Neighborhood Police Officers--totaling 50–100 City employees working across Detroit each school day to ensure the safety of Detroit students while riding DDOT busses to and from school.

Back to School Health

The Detroit Health Department offers back-to-school health screenings, immunizations and more:

  • Asthma and special health care support: Education, screenings, insurance guidance and asthma and allergy action plans are available for eligible children and young adults. Call 313-876-4223. An Asthma Awareness event will be held September 19 at Kemeny Recreation Center.
  • Back-to-school immunizations: DHD offers immunizations to help students prepare for the school year. Families can also connect with health services at the Community Health Fest on September 12.
  • Vision and hearing screenings: Appointment-based screenings for children ages 3–18 are available Fridays at 100 Mack or the Samaritan Building. Call 313-876-0134.

Dental Resources

If your family is covered by Medicaid, they have dental coverage, too.  Beginning October 1, Delta Dental will be the Healthy Kids Dental provider in Michigan, offering dental benefits to children under age 21 – at no cost to families, including:

  • Cleaning
  • Emergency pain treatment
  • Exams
  • Extractions
  • Fillings
  • Root canals
  • X-rays
