Partnership of the City of Detroit, The Detroit Riverfront Conservancy, and the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation
The Detroit Riverfront Conservancy, in partnership with the City of Detroit, and the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation, retained the acclaimed architectural and planning firm – Skidmore Owings and Merrill, LLP (SOM) to develop a visionary comprehensive neighborhood frame work plan for Detroit’s East Riverfront.
The framework is structured around four components:
Expanded Parks and Green Open Space - inclusive and accessible to all Detroiters along the riverfront.
Greenways – connecting residents through a safe and beautiful access to the riverfront from within the city.
Streetscapes - enhancing mobility for Detroit’s residents with safe and sustainable street improvements.
Development - empowering local businesses and property owners while preserving the rich storied and architectural heritage of Detroit’s riverfront.
East Riverfront started in 2017, with the redesign and implementation of Jefferson Avenue and from Rivard Street to Grand Avenue for a more pedestrian and bike-friendly experience. The Joseph Campau Greenway and connector redesign and implementation were also slated in 2017. Parallel to Dequindre Cut, it will provide a safe green passage to the waterfront from East Vernor Highway. These initial improvements will set the tone for further infrastructure and sustainable and equitable real estate development in the years to come.
