Did you know that on top of picking up your bulk trash every other week at the curb, the City of Detroit provides a handful of places where City of Detroit residents can take their bulk, yard, and household hazardous debris for free? We do! Below you will find three buttons that when clicked will take you to more information based on the type of debris that you need to drop off. Please remember to bring a valid driver’s license, state ID, or Detroit ID with you! Don't know your provider or can't go to the drop off site? The City will pick up bulk or construction waste for $40 per cubic yard. Payment can be made by credit card, cashier’s check, or money order please call (313) 876-0004 for more details! If the dumping in your neighborhood isn’t yours please report illegal dumping with the Improve Detroit app or call the BSEED Environmental Control at (313) 876-0426.

Cost: Free for Detroit residents!
Bring: Identification (driver's license, state ID or Detroit ID)
Accepts: Up to 1,000 lbs of yard waste/bulk waste and 4 tires per household per day
Does NOT accept: Household garbage, remodeling or construction debris, car or truck parts, hazardous waste
No commercial vehicles allowed

  • J. Fons Transfer Station – Household garbage, bulk & yard waste, construction and remodeling debris

    Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. – 5 p.m.
    Saturday, 7 a.m. – 1 p.m.
    Cost: $65 for first 2,000 lbs.; $50 for each additional 2,000 lbs.
    Does NOT accept: Tires, paints, liquid or hazardous waste

Hazardous Waste Drop-off:

  • Household Hazardous Waste Receiving Facility
    Thursdays, 7:30 a.m. – 2 p.m.
    Every 4th Saturday, 8 a.m. – 2 p.m.
    Accepts: TVs, pharmaceuticals, motor oil, paint, batteries, fluorescent light bulks, pesticides, etc.
    Does NOT accept: Household garbage, bulk or yard waste

Residential Pickup Services

Bins should be placed at the curb of home by 7 a.m. on the scheduled day of collection and no earlier than 6 p.m. the day before. Do NOT place in vacant lots or alleyways! You can text street address to 313-800-7905 to sign up for weekly trash, yard waste, bulk waste, and recycling reminders!

Solid Waste

  • Year-service

Bulk Waste

  • Up to 2 cubic yards of items such as furniture, appliances, mattresses, carpeting, clothes, etc.

  • Year-round service

  • Biweekly pickup on day of trash pickup

  • Does NOT include construction and demo debris, tires, car parts or hazardous waste


Yard Waste

  • Leaves, grass, clippings, twigs, and tree branches less than 2 inches in diameter

  • Service provided April through December

  • Biweekly pickup on day of trash pickup

  • All yard waste must be placed in paper yard waste bags

  • Tree branches must be cut to 4 ft. and tied in bundles weighing less than 60lbs


Opt-In Recycling

  • Paper, plastic, metals, glass, cardboard)

  • Year-round service

  • Biweekly pickup on day of trash pickup

  • Contact Green Living Science or Zero Waste Detroit to get a free recycling cart and to opt-in

  • Or contact hauler to opt-in

    Don't know your provider or can't go to the drop off site? The City can pickup bulk or construction waste for $40 per cubic yard. Payment can be made by credit card, cashier’s check, or money order. Pickup will occur within 24 hours of receipt of payment.

Failing to comply with waste disposal rules and/or illegal dumping can result in fines ranging from $100 to $10,000, vehicle confiscation, and a criminal warrant issued for littering.
