Patton Park
Located adjacent to the Patton Park Recreation Center at 2301 Woodmere (with an additional entrance off Dix St (shown)), Patton Park is an 84-acre park located on the Southwest side of Detroit in District 6, along the border of Dearborn. The park, named for the World War II US military leader General George S. Patton, was dedicated in the early 1950s. Along with traditional amenities like walking paths, sports fields, playgrounds/fitness equipment, and picnic shelters, the site is also home to a natural marsh area that is the only existing remnant of Baby Creek. Trails at Patton Park connect to other networks throughout the Mexicantown and Corktown neighborhoods.

INFORMATION ON THE PARK RENAMING PROCEDURE
During our community engagement for the Master Plan, the desire to rename the Park and/or Rec Center has been expressed by members of the public. The Renaming Process must be a community-driven initiative, without any departmental influence,

DOWNLOAD THE APPLICATION TO RENAME PARK, FACILITY OR AMENITY
Consideration for the renaming of the Park and/or Rec Center requires the completion of ONE (1) COMPLETE APPLICATION EACH. The application has four (4) parts: the questionnaire, the narrative, evidence of community support, and the fee. In completing the application, please indicate that Patton Park is a Regional Park.
- The brief questionnaire consists of answering several basic questions listed on the form.
- The narrative is an attached document that provides an explanation of how this individual or group has made major contributions to the City and/or neighborhood. Include how this name change will impact residents and businesses, as well as any anticipated opposition. (500 words or less recommended).
- EACH application requires the circulation of a petition to rename EITHER the park or rec center, including the addresses and zip codes for every signature., as evidence of community support. Do not structure the petition to support BOTH (2) with only ONE (1) signature. EACH petition requires obtaining 2,000 signatures (within a 3-mile/24 block radius of the Park/Rec Center) and/or Rec Center. These signatures are subject to verification.
- The application fee is $2,060 PER APPLICATION.
*If the Park/Rec Center renaming is approved there will be an additional $650 - $1,500 needed to build and install and new park sign.
Once we have reviewed a completed application, including the form, narrative, signature petition and fee, the application will be processed and you will be notified of preliminary approval within 30 days. Full approval, including City Council hearing and review will be completed within 6 months of receiving a completed application.

Community Meeting #1
Join us on Thursday, May 11, 2023 at 6pm @ Patton Recreation Center to find out where we are at with the Patton Park Master Plan. For the past month, we've been busy meeting with various stakeholders to inform them of the Master Plan and gain their feedback. We've also held several Focus Groups with key members of the community to get their direct input on Patton Park.
FOCUS GROUPS TO DATE
- Springdale Woodmere Block Club
- La Sed
- Congress of Communities
- Urban Neighborhood Initiatives
- Multiple Soccer Team Coaches & Players
Our online survey was also a big success with almost 400 respondents!
Now, it's time to come see what we've done with all your ideas and opinions! There are some general themes that have emerged from the community engagement process. We need your input on what you like, what you don't like, and what we're leaving out. Additionally, we'll be showing you some photos to help you visualize certain potential improvements to the park and getting your reactions. Your feedback is essential in developing the concepts that will come together to make the Master Plan. Please show up on May 11th and help us spread the word to your family, friends, and neighbors!
We're Kicking Off the Patton Park Master Plan!
The City of Detroit is currently undergoing the Master Planning process for Patton Park. It has been decades since the last Master Plan was drafted for the park and much has changed! But first, we want to hear from you! Tell us how you use Patton Park, what you like about it, and ideas you have for its future. Please take 5 minutes to fill out our brief online survey. Then, pass the opportunity along so others can share too. Your input counts!
Survey will only be open until March 22, 2023 so please don't delay!

PLANNING FOR CHANGES AT PATTON PARK!
Thanks to a grant from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR), The Joe Louis Greenway will extend to Patton Park through new trails being installed between Dix Ave to W Vernor. Stormwater solutions will also be coming to the parking lot off of Woodmere St with funding from National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF). Other exciting projects for Patton Park have also been proposed, such as a Bird Meadow. With all this project planning going on, the City of Detroit decided this was a perfect opportunity to ask residents how they feel about the park, as a whole, and what they'd like to see in the next ten years! To learn more about upcoming projects and the Master Plan process, click on the map below for an overview.
Stay Tuned for updates on upcoming meetings and more chances to participate in the Master Plan!
