The Detroit Health Department no longer offers free HIV self-test kits. However, free rapid HIV testing is available at Wayne State University Prevention (WSUP) Detroit, a friendly, patient-focused clinic. Results are ready in as little as 20 minutes.
Location: WSUP Detroit – 60 W. Hancock St, Detroit, MI 48201, (313) 826-9604
If you prefer to test yourself, HIV self-test kits can be purchased at most local drugstores, such as CVS or Walgreens.
Not ready to ask your doctor for an HIV test? We got you!
The Detroit Health Department is excited to offer HIV self-test kits free to residents of Detroit, Highland Park and Hamtramck. Once you place your order, we will ship you one OraQuick test kit. It is fast, accurate, and now free (while supplies last). It comes with complete instructions and information about what to do next, based on the result. To take the test, swab the inside of your mouth, wait 20 minutes, and you’ll have your preliminary results. Please watch the video below for step-by-step details on how you should take the HIV Self-Test.
If you may have had a possible recent exposure, however, you should test again later or get a test that can pick up HIV within 2 weeks of exposure. A positive OraQuick result should be followed by a confirmatory blood test at a clinic. The package will contain information about local options for testing, PrEP and PEP. Or click here to find a clinic near you.
