Tenants Rights Commission

Our Mission

Through the advocacy of Councilwoman Waters and her team, the Detroit Tenants Rights Commission (TRC) exists to make renting in Detroit safer, fairer, and more stable. We create a safe space for residents to be heard and share their concerns. We use resident feedback to recommend policy changes and shape new policies that protect tenants and make sure renters have a voice in City laws and decisions. The Commission also accepts resident complaints and works to resolve their housing issues by working with TRC staff to connect residents with the correct City departments when housing rules may be broken. We will also escalate tenant concerns to ensure timely and appropriate responses — particularly in matters involving health, safety, and habitability. The Commission also bring tenants and landlords together to talk through issues and find solutions when possible.

Each year, we report to the Mayor about housing needs in Detroit and provide our recommendations for change. Our members include seniors, people with disabilities, students, and young people, so many tenant perspectives are represented.

We are here to serve Detroit renters and hold monthly meetings where tenants can share their experiences, ask questions, and connect with City officials.
