Detroit Construction and Demolition Department Launches first-ever Facilities Week: Engaging the community and showcasing innovation

The City of Detroit’s Construction and Demolition Department is excited to announce its inaugural Facilities Week.  It’s a week dedicated to engaging, educating, and celebrating with the community while showcasing the essential work of the City of Detroit's Construction and Demolition Department's Facilities team. Through interactive events and transparent communication, Facilities Week aims to foster understanding, highlight career opportunities, and build stronger connections with residents and children demonstrating our commitment to enhancing public spaces and community well-being.  

“This week is all about education, transparency, and engagement,” said LaJuan Counts, director of Construction and Demolition. “We are especially eager to include children, mentoring and guiding them towards potential careers in the construction industry. We want residents to see firsthand how we maintain and improve public spaces and to inspire future careers in the skilled trades.” 

 WHAT: Facilities Week: A series of community and youth-focused events to showcase the essential work of the City of Detroit's Construction and Demolition Department's Facilities team. Activities include exclusive behind the scenes tours, volunteer opportunities, a career fair, and a community appreciation event. 

 WHEN:  Monday, July 15 – Friday, July 19. Each day offers unique activities that highlight community transparency and engages Detroit's youth. The schedule is as follows:

Monday 12PM-2PM: Fun with Facilities at Hart Plaza 

  • Kick off the week with an exclusive behind-the-scenes experience with the City of Detroit Facilities team as we collaborate with the City’s Recreation Day Camp youth to explore the inner workings of Dodge Fountain! Children will get a chance to discover how our dedicated team keeps this iconic landmark running smoothly. Enjoy snacks, games, and more. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to learn and have fun!

Tuesday 9AM-12PM: Tiny Trades Kick-off Launch at Northwest Activities Center, 18100 Meyers Road 

  • Continuing the fun with Tiny Trades Tuesday: CDD is introducing a City of Detroit volunteer-led initiative with local unions, empowering youth with skills and hands-on experience in union and skilled trades. Join us in supporting Tiny Trades and shaping Detroit’s future skilled tradespeople. 

Wednesday TBD time: Community Service with Facilities 

  • Being Civil Servants is our passion, spend the morning giving back to the community! Join the Facilities team for a community service event where we will work to give back, demonstrating our commitment to the city and its residents. 

Thursday 10AM-2PM: Career Fair with CDD and City of Detroit Departments at Northwest Activities Center, 18100 Meyers Road

Get ready to splash around as kids will get a chance to gain an inside look at what the City of Detroit Facilities team does to keep our splash pads safe and clean! Enjoy snacks, games, and interview opportunities with community members, facility staff, and more
